Melt & Pour Soap Base Types Explained: Transparent, Ultra White, Natural, Sulfate-Free & Suspending

Choosing the right melt & pour soap base is the single biggest formulation decision for a soap brand. Each base type serves a different positioning, price point and skin benefit. Here is how the main types compare and when to use each.

Transparent (glycerin) soap base

The classic high-glycerin base for clear, amber-tinted bars. Excellent moisturisation and easy processing make it the workhorse for handmade and commercial glycerin soaps. Choose it for herbal soaps, embedded designs and value-for-money clear bars. See our Transparent Soap Base.

Extra clear soap base

A premium version with water-like clarity, developed for luxury and designer soaps where visual perfection matters — layered soaps, embeds, jewel-tone colours. Typically paraben-free and alcohol-free with pH 9–10. See our Extra Clear Soap Base.

Ultra white soap base

An opaque, bright-white base for creamy, premium bathing bars. Quality is measured by TFM (Total Fatty Matter) — look for 30%+ or 40%+ TFM variants manufactured to BIS bathing bar norms. Ideal for milk soaps, luxury bathing bars and whitening ranges. See our Ultra White Soap Base.

Natural soap base

Plant-derived, sulfate-free, preservative-free, PEG-free and propylene-glycol-free bases made with natural foaming agents (like coco glucoside) — built for clean-beauty, herbal and Ayurvedic positioning. Available in opaque and transparent versions.

Sulfate-free soap base

SLS/SLES-free bases in transparent and ultra white formats. The fastest-growing category, driven by demand in the USA and Europe for gentler cleansing. If your brand says “clean” anywhere on the label, start here.

Suspending soap base

Engineered so exfoliants — walnut powder, orange peel, charcoal, coffee — stay evenly distributed instead of sinking. Essential for scrub soaps and visually loaded artisan bars. See our Suspending Melt & Pour Soap Base.

Specialty and functional bases

Bases with built-in actives or ingredients: goat milk (moisturising), aloe vera (soothing), charcoal (deep cleansing) and glycolic acid (exfoliating/brightening). These let you launch a differentiated SKU without formulation work.

Syndet bar base — the soap-free alternative

Syndet (synthetic detergent) bars use mild surfactants instead of saponified oils, achieving a skin-neutral pH impossible with true soap. The format behind leading dermatological bars globally. Available as melt & pour: Syndet Base and Solid Shampoo Bar Base.
